Born out of a revitalization of love, Bianca Walker’s exhibition “State” personifies the modern black community through the perspective of early 20th century white photography documenting rural African American life. This body of work is a pure expression of Walker’s capacity to love. Created after the passing of her father, and an intense 8 years of academia, the collection interprets the subjects in the historical photographs as familiar or unfamiliar loved-ones. Noticing this because of the love their family gave, Walker wanted to give the black laborers during this specific period of time the recognition they feel is often overlooked. As a result, the artist states,

“The way these works are handled help us confront this history not with the heaviness of that exploitation, but with the love of greeting lost family. They’re vibrant, chaotic, raw, and uniquely familiar.”
